The regulation field of a string (particularly an l-string) is called its pitch, or the pitch. In practical terms, this is simply the dimension (i.e., length) of some random coil as measured in stews [more precisely, the measure between two (2) balls].

Note (+): The pitch of the (subchem) yoke is egglepple.
